Why Organic Gardening?

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

You’ve probably noticed that organic foods are becoming very popular. This is because many individuals are learning the benefits of organic foods. At first, it seemed as if ‘organic’ was a word used to describe an exotic type of food, but it is anything but. Some individuals would even steer clear of the organic foods section in their local supermarket because of the fact that these foods were different. But now, organic food is something that is found all over the supermarket. There is a section in produce designated for organic, but you will find these foods scattered all throughout the supermarket.

But what is meant by ‘organic’?

Well, it all starts with the gardening. Organic gardening is different than most methods that are currently used. In other words, the methods are different than the methods that are used to grow the rest of the fruits and vegetables in the produce section.

In case your house has a big entrance hall or a huge dining room, you can think of buying an iron chandelier as lighting option. Chandeliers give a lot of light, because they have many bulbs. The light wakes up to life, creating patterns all over the room.

Wrought iron is beautiful and elegant. Place a wrought iron chandelier in your bedroom, together with a matching bed. You’ll love to sleep in there. Romance will be in the air, and you and your partner can have a great time in such a room, reminding of those hotel honeymoon suites.

How A Weber Grills Changed The Way We Cook

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Open brazier grilling can be frustrating when mother nature doesn’t cooperate. George Stephen Sr. found this to be true and was instrumental in Weber grills leading the outdoor grilling revolution just after World War II.

Solving this problem became a mission for home and the rest is history….

His first solution was quite easily accomplished due to the fact that he was employed by Weber Brothers Metal Works, which was a metal fabricating company. He made a round hood by cutting a buoy into halves that was made of metal, and viola he actually invented his first version of the kettle grill.

After that was done, all it took was some marketing for this different type of grill, which quickly became popular. It was so popular that the company’s name became the Weber-Stephens Products Company. Then in just a matter of years, George Stephens bought the company to become the only owner.

The Secret On How To Grow A Healthy House Plants

Lighting

Indoor house plants prefer an environment where they can get sunlight in a doorway, archway or other location. Direct sunshine for a portion of the day will happily tolerated by plants as long as it is not direct sunlight for long periods of time. Morning or filtered sunshine is ideal and bright light coming through colored or frosted glass panes makes a pretty background for a group of potted palms and can be highly beneficial to their growth. Such glass as this however, can transmit heat and this makes the plant need more frequent watering and attention to humidity needs to be added if needed. Solar films can be applied to windows to reduce heat and glare can be very important to house plants.

Humidity Needs

An indoor environment generally has low humidity and will fluctuate with considerable changes in the outdoor environment, heating and cooling. Plants do not tend to do well with low humidity though there is a wide range of responses within any given group of plants. Some species will not be tolerable of low and varying humidity and will lose their luster and seem dull and can become the victim of a pest attack such as by spider mites or mealy bugs.

Finding The Best Mulch Options For Your Gardening And Landscaping

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

There are many different possible uses for mulch, topsoil and other backfill aggregates, and not all of them are just for landscaping and gardening. Limestone gravel, for example, can be used for backfill in drain and basement waterproofing projects, because of its ability to allow water to filter through the substance.

Did you know that mulch can be created from substances such as shredded tires, bark, wood, cardboard, rubber, and other unusual materials? While the most common type of mulch used in gardening is made up of nutrient rich soil, this is not necessarily always the case.

In most cases, mulch is used as a substance for gardening and landscaping to substitute for existing topsoil that might not be as appropriate. By removing the upper half foot of topsoil and replacing it with nutrient rich mulch, the plants and trees in your garden will be much healthier and live longer.

The mulch used for gardening and plant growth is generally different than decorative types that are only spread out to make a yard more visually pleasing. Gardening mulches more resemble potting soil, and are more rich with nutrients that plants need to thrive in different environments.

You want to collaborate to reduce this problem, you have a chance. How the lawn care industry operates

Monday, December 15th, 2008

One of the deplorable features of modern society is that people are on the constant look out for quick fix solutions to their problems. This is directly reflected in the importance that the lawn care industry has gained today. Of course, general revenue and sales are also responsible for the boom in the lawn care industry, but the major reason is definitely the lethargic attitude of people in general.

To give a good example, all you have to do is institute a comparison between the past and the present generation. Around 20 to 30 years back, hiring professional help for the garden was unheard of and people took pride in tending to their garden. Today, on the other hand, if you have not hired someone to do your work for you, you are looked down upon by others around you.

Apart from laziness, another reason for the increase in demand of professionals is that property sizes of people have grown radically. Thus, maintaining a large area is not a cake walk. In other words, hiring help becomes an inevitable feature with a very large lawn.

Hydroponic Gardening Made Easy With a Greenhouse

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

If you’re into hydroponic gardening, you might want to think about purchasing or building a greenhouse. Many people start off with some sort of homemade hydroponics setup in their basement or spare room. However, it’s a lot easier to manage all the conditions necessary for a thriving garden if it’s located in a greenhouse. It’s a lot easier to manage lighting conditions, air movement and temperature.

Growing your hydroponic garden indoors just isn’t as ideal as using a greenhouse. A hydroponic greenhouse allows for better lighting and watering system setup. There aren’t too many people who want to let their hydroponic garden take over the house.

The grow lights and irrigation systems required for successful hydroponics can be very space consuming. With a greenhouse these systems can be placed exactly where you need them. This is important in hydroponics, because regulation of water and light are more essential than in a regular garden.

One of the most important advantages of growing your hydroponic garden in a greenhouse is the ability to control the light. In order to flourish, plants that are grown hydroponically require plenty of light. At the same time, it’s important they don’t get too much direct sunlight since it will lead to excessive algae buildup.

How To Protect Your HousePlants From Pests

Friday, December 12th, 2008

There are many different types of species that eat up houseplants. There are also a few found in almost all areas.

The first type of common houseplant pests are so tiny you cannot even see them with your eyes, though their damage can become obvious, bacteria.

Rotting roots is a common type of problem with plants that are victim of over watering. Some forms of rot are the result of fungi that grow as a result of over water. The excess moisture aids the growth of bacteria found in the soil that already live in the soil and can be beneficial in small amounts. Once they get to a certain size, the attack the roots and they get transported up into the body of the plant and the leaves. This can quickly kill even the healthiest plant.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, is applicable here. Simply watch how much you water your plants and when. How much water is the right amount, when it best time to water and this will vary from one species to another. You need to research the different types of needs your plant may have.
