Fish – A Good Source Of Nourishment For Man And Plant

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Have You Ever tried planting fish under tomato plants for a real bonus in the way of fertilizer? It really works, but my first experience was disastrous, to say the least.

We took our small son fishing on the banks of the ol Missouri. On occasion we have caught fine pike, trout, catfish and other desirable fish on these family expeditions. However, the whole catch that afternoon amounted to four suckers and two large carp. The carp, caught by our four-year old, seemed like whales to him. How would you explain to such a small angler that his catch wasn’t worth taking home? Neither could we explain, so home they went where he pridefully showed them around the neighborhood.

Long before the boy was awake the next morning, I prepared to inter the fish by the garden fence. My elderly German neighbor, a gardener from way back, leaned across the gate. He advised me to hack them up and bury generous pieces in the bottom of holes dug for fine tomato plants he would give me. This I did.

We had fillets from the store for dinner that evening, which the little fellow claimed without question.

Getting Rid of Pesky Moles and Gophers

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Have you ever walked out into your yard and stepped into the grass and had your feet sank down a little? It’s not because it was muddy or wet, but because the ground isn’t as solid as it should be. You see little hills throughout your yard and there appear to be tunnels under the ground. Is it the work of some elaborate plan to destroy your yard? There are spots all over the place where the grass has died or turned brown and your yard just looks terrible. This is undoubtedly the work of moles or gophers.

These annoying little vermin can totally demolish your yard. It has nothing to do with the care that you give your lawn; moles and gophers don’t just move in on people who let their yards go. It can happen with any yard, anywhere; and while that may sound somewhat overwhelming realize that you’re not in this alone. There are millions of yards around the world that are affected by these rodents every day. They can do damage in excess of what most people think is rational, and at other times, you barely know that they’re there. Believe it or not, there’s no rhyme or reason to why they move in or not and that knowledge might be extremely distressing.

A brilliant way to decorate your driveway with landscaping is to use Bark mulch. Bark mulch is very popular because it’s very stylish and looks great.

Bark mulch is very popular and a lot of people use it for their gardens as decorative material. You can choose to have your Bark mulch set into the ground or if you prefer you can have loose Bark mulch.

Bark mulch that is loose isn’t as popular because it’s harder to walk and drive on. Parks and playgrounds have loose Bark mulch sometimes so you will proably know what it looks like.

Pathways and driveways look great with Bark mulch and a lot of people use it because it’s cheap and effective. Pine and birch Bark mulch is the most common and there are lots of different kinds available on today’s market.

Cheap Bark mulch doesn’t have the same effect but is good for people who are on a budget – this stuff is still worth while. In simple terms, bark mulch is just bark that has been chipped into small pieces to make a mulch which gives the appropriate effect.

Learn to Build and Fertilizer Your Soil

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Soil is the gardener’s bread and butter, much like dough is for the chef. Without good soil all the effort in the world can come to naught, just as poor dough can lay to waste even the most extravagant culinary effort. Soil varies by area into three broad categories, and also varies in quality from area to area. The categories that soil falls into are claylike, sandy and silt. Ideal soil contains a good mixture of the three types, and is called good garden loam. Clay soil possesses the greatest water-holding capability, while sandy soil possesses the least.

Humus is an organic substance that helps bind soils together. It also makes the soil more receptive to water, actively absorbs light from the sun and fertilizes and improves the texture of the soil by pulling beneficial compounds from plants. Humus can be found in organic fertilizers such as manure and compost heaps, and can also be purchased as a stand-alone product.

Like the grass, trees and plants that take root in it, soil is a living thing, composed of millions of organisms. The four key ingredients needed to maintain an optimum soil health are sunlight, water, food and bacterial activity. Save for the sun, the other three elements can all be added to the soil through organic fertilizers.

Landscaping Ideas For Your Backyard

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

One of the most important things to remember when it comes to landscaping is that everything should be planned. None of the materials, equipment, or furnishings have to be expensive but you should have a good idea going in of what you want to do. This is because it is impossible to be satisfied if you do not know what you want to end up with in the first place.

Before you get started, you should evaluate the backyard and figure out things like which parts will be completely exposed to the sun and which will be in the shade. It would also be a good idea to figure out which areas water will reach when it rains. If you have a notebook with simple layouts with all these considerations and mark them accordingly to be used later on as a guide, you will then be able to plan a course of action. This will be helpful for selecting the types of shrubs and flowering plants that would flourish in those conditions.

Propane Heaters Have Their Advantages

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Propane gas has been useful for a very long time. Many happy campers use it on a continual basis; many have been doing so for years. It is also a useful alternative for garage heating sources. Recently propane heaters have become very popular as a source of heating for the home.

What exactly is a propane heater you may ask if you have never seen one. They range in design and style but for the most part they are small and are fueled by tanks full of propane. There are small to large cylinders and some home, if completely propane dependent may have a huge stake out in the yard, which get fuels from a large truck.

The fuel is a form of liquid that is known as LPG or Liquefied Petroleum Gas. It has been proven a great alternative fuel and is very environmentally friendly. It is non-toxic and does not damage the soil or water.

You can move some portable propane heaters from one room to another when you want to heat a different area of your home. Some are portable enough to move them where you need them, when you need them. There are other moderate sizes in units such as wall-mount propane heaters. You may also choose from stand along units that can heat any room you use it in on a continual basis.

Growing a Successful Indoor Bonsai Tree

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Bonsai plants, the result of an age old tradition, are an attractive addition to any home. Bonsais are highly attractive, so many people proudly display them in their houses. However, indoor bonsai trees require some extra maintenance. The reason for this is that they aren’t getting the advantages that come from exposure to outdoor weather conditions and natural sunlight. They might appear to be hardy. However, there are certain bonsais that will become fragile when it comes to light and water.

Watering Your Indoor Bonsai

When you bring a bonsai tree indoors it will require lighting to replace the natural sunlight that it would have been receiving beforehand. Monitoring how frequently it is watered is also important. Bonsai plants will also be benefited if they are placed in a well ventilated area. The water requirements of your bonsai plant will depend on what type it is. Another key factor is the soil. Very dry soil works well for some species of bonsai, while some others prefer their soil to be quite moist. Your plant might need to be misted. This will help to create a rainforest humidity in which your bonsai plant will thrive. If you use a humidity tray, be certain that the pot isn’t placed directly in the water; instead it should be sitting on a stand or some stones.

My friend is in a renowned roofing company. After he showed me a blueprint for my requirement. I decided and finalized them for my dream work. The ideas that they have given are simply wonderful and I am expecting very good results

Seedling Lilies – Beautiful Flowers at Low Cost

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Many lily bulbs are easily raised from seed. Lily seedlings grow more slowly than many perennials but their care is simple and patience is needed more than skill. A few species will flower the second season, some the third summer while others need another year or two to reach flowering size.

The raising of seedling lilies provides some of the most beautiful flowers at low cost, a luxury for which one is glad to swap the time it takes to grow them. Moreover, a batch of seedlings often has interesting variations full of surprises. And, further, seedling lilies start their careers free from mosaic as the virus of this trouble is not transmitted through seeds. Unless planted near mosaic-infected plants, they remain quite healthy.

Where to get seed?

Lily dealers and a few seedsmen sell seeds of many species and hybrids. Species come true from seed but seeds of hybrids may produce a very variable lot of plants, many wholly unlike their parents. Seeds of some of the rare lilies are often hard to find; in which case, it may be necessary to obtain bulbs and produce ones own seeds.
