Fertilize Pest and Flowers – 3 June Garden Task

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

In the southern landscape and garden nature is in full swing.

Azaleas have their last feeding this month. Use an azalea and camellia fertilizer with a 4-8-5 or 5-10-10 formula. Where the plants are close together in beds spread 2 1/2 to 3 pounds over 100 square feet. For single plants feeding consists of 1/4 to 1 pound, depending upon the size of the plant. Do not scratch the fertilizer into the soil. Apply it to the surface and water it in.

Make cuttings of azaleas and camellias now. New wood should be half ripe in June. Watch for lace bugs on azaleas and scale on camellias. Oil emulsions are good when temperatures are not over 90 degrees.

Chrysanthemums are now growing actively. Keep them growing steadily through the summer months. That is the whole secret of good chrysanthemum culture. Once the plants are stunted by lack of food or moisture further growth is seriously impaired. Feed monthly and never let them dry out.

Flower seeds can still be sown, for there is time to have plenty of blooms on zinnias, petunias and marigolds. Perennials may also be sown now for next years bloom. Be sure to start these in a shaded area where the seedlings will not be injured by the hot, drying sun.

Is A Pineapple Fountain The Right Feature For Your Garden

Friday, June 19th, 2009

While it is not widely known, the impact the pineapple has had on culture, dcor, and architecture is significant. The design of this unique fruit has appeared or inspired different features including pedestals, brackets, wall sculptures, corbels, furniture, and stonework. It’s no surprise then that pineapple, associated with inviting atmospheres and hospitality, has also been used in water fixtures. The pineapple fountain is one of the more fascinating and attractive results.

The pineapple fountain is linked to the origins of the pineapple trade in the American colonies and Caribbean exportation to Europe during the 17th century. The pineapple gained in popularity not only because of its wonderful flavor, but also its intriguing appearance. Both the aesthetics and the decorative possibilities of the fruit led to a long period of home design and decoration that incorporated the pineapple. The pineapple fountain appeared at some point during this time.

At first, the pineapple fountain, like other ornate designs, was something reserved for the wealthy. Beautifully crafted pineapple fountains appeared in the homes of planters, aristocrats, and members of nobility. Additionally, the pineapple fountain found a place in public architecture. This could mean fountains situated in city parks or in front of courthouses.

Solar Lighting Can Save Money

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Much of the global economy is tied to powers of oil and other nonrenewable energy sources. Today, the same trend continues with everything from cars to electricity and the manufacture of everything from cans for sardines to plastics for toys are directly or indirectly linked to the consumption of oil.

As a result, people from all walks of life and from every nation on earth, no matter if it is a great super power like that of the United States to one of the third world countries like Haiti, find themselves held at just about gun point due to the dependence of foreign oil. One does not have to go very far to see the ravaging effects of not only oil explorations but of oil consumption on wildlife and ecology not to mention the effects that have been ravaging indigenous peoples who are living in newly discovered oil reserves. If you want to see if you can make a difference, try gardening with solar lighting and enjoy nature’s many benefits illuminated the nature-friendly way.

Save Money This Summer with a Resedential Water Slide

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Summer is here and when summer comes, kids want to play. One of the most popular summer activities is a trip to the water park since what could be more fun than a water slide on a hot summer day.

By the time summer arrives, kids are ready for the action. Who could blame them, as they have spent the past cold and rainy months indoors, with homework, , computer games and TV. Now it is time for some summer fun as they dream about baseball fields, water and amusement theme parks

Summer fun can get a little expensive and in these hard economic times, people have to consider cutting back of the summer fun. A family could easily spend over $200.00 on one of these family outings when you consider the cost of getting there and all the things you buy once you are there.

More and more families are turning to their own backyards for family fun. The economy is forcing people to stay home this summer but that does not mean you have to abandon good old fashion summer fun.

Building an Indoor Herb Garden – The Journey

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

If I buy my fresh Herbs at a Supermarket and use them in my cooking I am mostly disappointed with the quality and the result.

The longer it is between picking the herb from the garden and you using it significantly impacts on the flavor.

The herbs I currently use come from a couple of places, on the deck outside the kitchen and also down the steps in an area behind my workshop.

As its winter here in Sydney Australia, the plants are not too crash hot now, but in summer they can be good. I just use normal soil here.

I have had some great crops using the Hydroponics System I installed about 12 months ago. The Lemon Grass comes from a small pot I got as a gift and the basil is just excellent.

Why is he telling us all of this, you are probably asking?

Leaving the cook bench and going outside to pick some of the great fresh herbs I have, is a real nuisance, So, as you can see – a bit of a defect in the old character.

Flowers in Florida – Flowering Annuals 101

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Growing flowers is different in Central Florida, because of the climate. Florida only has three seasons. Winter weather consists of cool nights and an occasional freeze. Spring has some cool nights without any freezing. High night temperatures and high humidity along with heavy rains characterize much of the summer and early fall.

Perennials are plants that can grow for several years without replacement. Flowers that don’t fit that requirement are called bedding plants or annuals. Bedding plants are replaced at the beginning of each season with varieties that fit the specific conditions of that season. Perennials typically bloom only part of the year, annual beds can offer almost continuous blooms.

Growing flowers in Central Florida brings good news and bad news. The good news is that there is lots of sunshine and winters are mild. The bad news includes lots of pests, heavy rains and sandy infertile soils. That means flower beds require more maintenance than normal. The time needed to scout for and treat pests will increase.
