How To Maintain Your Septic Tank ?

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

In case you are using a private septic tank system for your home then you need to take care of its pumping and maintenance. For pumping of septic tank, you first need to find out the time interval in which this pumping should be done. This is basically decided by certain factors like size of septic tank, members in your family and amount of waste going inside the septic tank.

A septic tank basically has three different layers. The solid particles of the waste settles at the bottom of the tank and form the bottom most layer. The light weighted solid rises to the top and forms the top most layer and the middle layer is of treated water that goes to leaching field through various outlet pipes.

If septic tank pumping is not done periodically the sludge can build up to a level such that it begins to exit the outlet pipe of the septic tank and spread throughout the leaching field. In short the sludge can clog the leaching field. Repairing a leaching field is extremely expensive and replacing one can cost upwards of $20,000.
