Septic tank along with drain field gives rise to a small sewage treatment system. All the human waste and water from home goes to this septic tank only. This tank normally have a rectangular shape which in located under the ground. Generally, it is made up of concrete and it is divided into chambers. Each chamber has different purposes like the lowest chamber contains most of the solid and middle chamber contains comparatively clean water.

Waste from toilets, showers and sinks generally move to a septic tank. There in the tank the solid waste easily settles in the bottom most chamber and treated water move to the middle chamber after being treated from the bacteria.

The construction of a septic tank should be in a way that the microorganism could easily break and digest the sludge. For this, the septic tank should be constructed to have inlet, overflow and outlet valves diagonal to each other so that the flow of stream is in vertical pipes.

The semi-purified water moves to the second chamber via the overflows that are constructed such that the upward motion of water prevents larger particles from flowing into the second chamber.
