How To Differentiate Between Desalination And Water Purification ?

Although water purification and desalinization are different, these are generally taken to one and the same. Desalinization is one of the systems to purify water. The difference between them is discussed here in details.

Water desalination, also commonly known as desalinization is the process of making seawater drinkable. This includes removing of salt from the sea water. However, as far as water purification is concerned, purification of seawater sources as well as surface water (fresh water lakes, reservoirs, streams and rivers), ground water (wells and aquifer taps) and reclaimed water (from waste water plants) is also included.

Desalinization basically makes the water salt free and this was done in olden times also. The method adopted was filtration and distillation. This method is capable of removing only undissolved salts and not the dissolved ones.

Modernization of desalinization has given us the Reverse Osmosis systems. This system is used worldwide for desalination of large volume of water. This system removes not only the dissolved salts and organisms but also the water borne disease carrying element etc.

The water purification methods adopted for making lake water drinkable, is not able to make the seawater salt free. Thus the main difference between both these techniques is discussed here.

Apart from the points of differentiation, the two water purifying methods have some things in common as well. Similar to the desalination units that cut down the aqueous salts from water; commercial Reverse Osmosis units available in the market are also capable for this. In addition to this, these can also purify lake and sewer water also.

Distillation machines run on electricity to convert the salty water into pure form. Hence places with bountiful power supply can surely use the seawater and other water resources for drinking and cooking purpose with the help of distillation machine installed. Well, on the other hand, this is not the case with the other filtering and purifying appliances as these are incapable to purify seawater.

Desalinization is becoming more and more popular all over the world. Basically, the process can be done by two different methods that are, thermal and membrane. Membrane desalination utilizes either pressure or electrical current. Thermal desalination heats water to the point of boiling, creating steam which then condenses into fresh water. Thermal desalination is the easiest method of desalinating water at home.
