Responsible Waste Disposal At Home

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

It is everyone’s obligation to practice responsible waste disposal. All over the world, landfills are filling up at an alarming rate. This will present many problems in the future. One of these problems will be increased cost for goods. The more items that are recycled, the cheaper it will be to produce them. It may also reduce the price of gasoline. Here are some things that everyone can do.

Recycle at home

There are still many people not participating in local recycling. All of their trash goes straight into the landfills. This makes it harder on those that participate. Separating trash items is not that difficult. It will save you on things like trash bags.

Household hazardous waste

There are many household items that have to be properly disposed of. They can present a hazard to landfills and the environment. Microwave ovens cannot be simply thrown away. This also applies to old smoke detectors. These items both contain radioactive elements. Radioactive material can easily poison everything that it comes into contact with.

There are many other household items that are dangerous. Any type of chemicals need to be properly take care of. Paint cans and containers will be hazardous to landfills. Remember things that contain acid or alkaline, too.

Use Brick Sealer To make Your Bricks Last Longer

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Bricks have been used as a building material for thousands of years. But they tend to breakdown over time. This was true until the invention of brick sealer was invented to rectify this situation and now bricks can remain intact with the use of sealer.

You mostly find bricks that are rectangular. They are made of clay and formed in mass production that is baked in a kiln. You can find them in a variety of colors from natural to other lighter shades. Because they are clay based they can be damaged if you do not use a sealer to protect them.

The biggest problem with bricks is that they are highly porous. Water is the biggest enemy of bricks, not just big rainstorms but in high humidity climates or simply the water in the air. Water will wear down and erode the clay in the bricks. This will eventually weaken the structure of the bricks requiring repair or replacement.

Choosing a brick sealer is not enough. You want to find one that is high in quality. These can be your best defence for protecting your great looking brick. Paying a little more for a better quality sealer is worth the investment in this circumstance.

Concrete Waterproofing Should Be On Every Home Owners Mind

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

There are many anomalies when considering concrete waterproofing. Not least of which is the strange individuality of organic compounds when mixed with chemicals. You can never be too certain as to the outcome. That being said, whatever solution is used, it is vital to look at the condition of the concrete and note its position in relation to water.

The topical asphalt based sealants have always been best choice for most jobs and are one of the best methods of protection against erosion of brickwork and foundations. Manufacturing processes as well as product development is an ongoing situation. There is a constant evolution in methods.

There are for example a number of additives which are created as a hedge against damp. Water vapour penetrating through concrete is highly damaging and can cause collapse of structures. Today’s market is chock-a-block full of new sealants that do the job of keeping water out. These are formulated specifically according to the amount of waterproofing that is desired.

Environmentally Sound Hydroponic Gardening

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Hydroponic gardeners from big to small reap the advantages of this growing method while helping keep the environment clean.

With increased awareness of damaging chemicals and pesticides used in traditional gardening, the need arose for a better way of growing plants that will continue to evolve. The future of hydroponic growing is bright and is being embraced by many, from individual hobbyists to large factory farms. Hydroponic gardening has become one of the many ways people can go green.

Environmentally Sound & Economically Sustainable

Gardening without soil (hydroponically) is environmentally friendly according to the Environmental Protection Agency. This is great news for everyone that shares my concern for the environment. In addition to the environmental and economic benefits, it is easier to rotate crops in a hydroponic gardening system than in traditional soil-based garden. Crops can be changed over very easily, allowing gardeners to adjust production levels based on several factors, including market and seasonal conditions.

Teak Patio Furniture: Tips For Selecting Durable And Attractive Furnishing

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Teak patio furniture makes it possible to turn outdoor space into outdoor living space. If you have wished you could have more room for entertaining, all you have to do is to furnish your patio with beautiful and durable furniture pieces made of teak. Patios in northern climates can even be more usable by adding patio heaters and Teak Patio Furniture. Look for durable pieces that suit the style of your home.

The rain forests of south and southeast Asia is the home for most of the teak forest of the world. Teak wood is very dense hardwood with a coarse grain. The trees are deciduous and lose their leaves during monsoon season. The timber is harvested from the trunks of the trees. The timber is used for furniture, but it is also found as boat decks, house decks, and as flooring indoors.

The natural resinous oils in the hardwood timber makes it very resistant to moisture and to insects. Unlike other woods, metal left in contact with teak doesn’t rust or corrode. Natural teak wood also contains a silica compound that helps to prevent drying, warping, fungus and mold. Teak is very resistant to rot and to many environmental factors.

The Infrared-Technology Trash Can

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

For some people, trash isn?t just a slightly distasteful part of life. It?s revolting, something to be avoided at all costs. If you?re one of these people, the type who drop their eggshells into the trashcan from two feet up, the kind who wash their hands after blowing their nose, the kind who swear by their hand sanitizer, passing it out at restaurants before the meal comes, then look no further for your trashcan needs than an infrared touchless variety.

You know the type. The people who hold in their sneezes (at what cost to their brain I know not), or who distribute hand sanitizer at restaurants. These people are neurotic about their trash, and hate to be near it.

So to assuage their neuroses, a good investment for their kitchen or bathroom is the infrared trash can. This nifty little machine detects your hand hovering a few inches above the lid and opens automatically, thus allowing you to drop your trash in without having to actually be near it. It?s the obsessive compulsive?s, or just the very fastidious?s dream.

Support Your Local Wildlife with an Inviting Backyard Habitat

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

A wildlife habitat is a combination of food, water, shelter, and space arranged to meet the needs of wildlife. Even a small yard can be landscaped to attract birds, butterflies, beneficial insects, and small animals. Trees, shrubs, and other plants provide shelter and food for a variety of wildlife.

The plants you use to provide food and cover will play a large part in determining the specific wildlife species that might be attracted to your backyard. Adding nesting boxes, feeders, and watering sites, such as fountains and garden ponds, can greatly improve the habitat.

Planning is an important step in providing an attractive and productive wildlife habitat. Keep in mind that you have both a horizontal area to work with (the size of your yard) as well as a vertical area that stretches from the ground to the treetops. The vertical area is composed of four distinct zones: — the canopy formed by the tallest tree branches — understory vegetation consisting of smaller trees, shrubs, and vines — the floor which is often dominated by low-growing ground covers, and — the basement where a variety of organisms exist in the soil. Different wildlife species favor each of these zones, so a wide range of habitats can be provided on even a small piece of land.

Controlling Rodents And Pests With Natural Solutions

Friday, July 31st, 2009

While there are people who like to have rodents as pets, most people don’t want them in their homes and see them as pests that can carry disease. Putting out traps, getting a cat, or sprinkling poison around their homes are just some of the ways that they use to try to get rid of them. For a lot of people, though, the idea of getting rid of the rodents is coupled with an unease at deliberately and often inhumanely killing them, and people are starting to look for better ways to get them out of and away from their homes that don’t involve harm to the little creatures.

If you want to remove rats and mice from your home and/or discourage them from coming around the good news is that there are natural solutions for rodent control that you can use so you don’t have to kill them. Killing them ‘humanely’ has been another argument that people have made, but what constitutes ‘humane’ killing is certainly arguable, so no real conclusion on that has been reached. There aren’t that many choices for people who don’t want to kill rodents or cause them to suffer but who certainly don’t want them around, but there are two: trapping them humanely and releasing them elsewhere, and using natural methods to keep others away.
