No matter if this is your first home or not, you likely can benefit from a bit of lawn care training. What do you need to do to this lawn to get it to the point where you will be happy with it? There are many resources that can help you to get it the way that you want to. During the first months and even years of owning your property, you will be able to fine tune your abilities with fertilizing and caring for your lawn in general. When you pay attention to it, your lawn will do well under your guidance.

Getting Help

You may want to talk to your neighbor that has a great looking yard for some advice. They will have the same soil and other factors as you do, therefore giving you a great starting point. You may also want to look for lawn care training from your local gardening shop or home improvement store. Ask about the types of plants that do well in your area and be sure to ask about all of the tips they can give you with maintaining your yard. Your local extension office can also provide you with the tools you need to maintain a healthy and productive yard. Some offer websites that can be helpful to you as well.

Your Local Nursery

Perhaps the best local lawn care training would come from your local nursery perhaps because they special in the care and upkeep of plants in the same climate that you are in. Some offer great pricing on the supplies you need as well, and may be able to help you find the right plants for your yard. Finding a quality location is important because you want one that has a knowledgeable staff willing to work with you. It can be a great help to bring into the center a leaf or a blade of grass and ask for help on a disease that you may have or in finding the right product for that plant. They can help with a number of things including helping you to know you are on the right track.

Lawn care training is effective when you take the time to look for quality resources to work with you. The fact is that maintain your yard means educating yourself about the proper methods of doing so. When you can accomplish this, you will find yourself in the perfect position for success.

The energy supplies in the earth are gradually geing used up and it’s becoming more and more important to find and use alternative energy sources for industrial and domestic use. It’s no wonder that so many families are choosing to use home-produced “green energy”

The wind turbine is getting to be a common site across the land – you may be familiar with the huge ones in use by electricity supply companies. But you can build one from scratch that will suit an average family home, without breaking the bank.

There is hardly a place on earth that does not have enough wind activity to keep a home-built turbine whirring away. The great thing about wind energy is that its free! Like solar power and of course water which powers various hydro-electric power stations, it is something that occurs naturally. Its available all the time, waiting to be harnessed, to be tapped into.

You can build such a system for $200 or less. If you have a modicum of DIY skills and a good guide, you could put it together over the course of a weekend. And the materials required should be available from your local hardware store.

It’s not surprising that so many are turning to wind power for their home energy requirements. It can be very satisfying to be able to make your own power. And if you produce more than you need, you can sell it back to the electricity company and watch the energy meter go backwards!

There are many advantages in favour of building such a system – one of the advantages is that it is so clean – there is no smoke, and no waste by-product. And of course the wind is available, free to anyone.

One of the strongest arguments in favour of a home wind power system, is the great savings that can be achieved. It is estimated that it can cut your electricity bill by 80% – or even 100%. That makes it a no-brainer for many people, especially in difficult economic times.

Once the system is up and running, it will require a minimum of maintenance. And the running costs will be low also.

And when you use home wind power, your are of course helping in the fight against global warming, and also reducing your “carbon footprint”.

Wind power has been around for a long time and its a proven system of electricity generation. It has now become available for the average family and I believe that wind and other sources of alternative energy will be used more and more by people in our neighbourhood, as people realise its many benefits.

For painting murals and creating faux finishes on walls, some understanding of paints and their properties and possibilities is essential if you don’t want to make ugly and potentially costly mistakes. If in doubt, you should be able to get good advice from your paint retailer or hardware store.

* Creating murals isn’t just about applying your design. It starts with preparation of your wall surface. You’ll need a special sealer for fresh plaster or concrete and any holes or cracks that you’ve filled will also need sealing before painting over. Once you’ve completed your mural you may need to protect it with a clear glaze that will also give it a shiny finish.

* Make sure that your paint is designed for your purpose, whether that is use inside or outside. Think about the wear it will be subjected to. Murals in kitchens and bathrooms will require a steam and/or water-resistant paint. Don’t be tempted to cut corners and buy cheap, low quality paint.

* Once your wall is prepared, make sure your base coat is the right type, because paint will not ‘take’ well on some paints. So-called ‘flat paint’ is a cheap matte finish often used for interiors. This low gloss paint is to be avoided as a base. It saps color from paint applied on top of it. It also dries too fast, when what you need is a ‘wet edge’ to ensure paint spreads evenly. Pearl or satin paints, which are glossier, make an ideal base layer for your mural.

* Acrylic and latex paints are a good choice for interior murals. (Modern latex paints do not necessarily contain rubber and are sometimes called ‘acrylic latex’ paints.) They are water-based, which makes cleaning brushes and spills easy.

* Remember to check before you mix paints. Acrylic and latex paints are water-based and mixing them with oil-based paints is an easy error to be avoided at all costs. It can even be a problem applying latex or acrylic paints onto a glossy base layer, since they may not ‘take’ well.

* You can get down to the crucial matter of choosing colors after you’ve selected a suitable paint for your purpose and location. Bear in mind that the color on the sample may look very different on your wall. Colors change, and can vary in intensity and depth depending on whether they are in a shady or sunny room. They may also appear brighter or more intense when applied to large areas of wall. You can do a few test patches before you leap in. If the color isn’t right you lighten or darken it by mixing it, as long as you remember the golden rule that oil and water don’t mix.

If you know what paints are available and what their properties are, then you are ready to experiment with interesting effects. You can have a lot of fun with the many novelty paints available, with finishes ranging from texture, to metallic to fluorescent!

by Larry Angell

I often get visitors at my site asking about electrical home wiring and different wiring methods and projects. Their main concern is to attempt to do the electrical project or hire it out to professionals.

Because of the housing and financial crisis, Im observing that many people cant get home loans to hire contractors to do the construction for them. Im seeing many people doing the work for themselves out of necessity and not simply to save money.

Most homeowners dont have a problem with things like building walls and putting in floors, but they are often doubtful about home wiring.

First of all, the most important thing is safety. If any electrical work is done, you need to make sure that youre not working on energized circuits. The next point is that all home wiring jobs need to be inspected whether its done by you or a professional. This helps assuage the fears that homeowners have wondering if their home wiring projects are going to be a fire hazard to them.

You dont need to have a complete knowledge of electricity to do your own wiring. The most important thing is to know the local residential electrical codes because they will be the mandatory requirements the electrical inspectors will follow. Being able to look at electrical diagrams and formulas really help in understanding how to run the circuits.

If you can look at a drawing, photo, or other illustration, you can get a good understanding how the cable is run. There are a few types of cable that are used in home construction. Non-metallic sheathed cable or more commonly called, Romex cable is often used for home electrical wiring.

Romex has different sizes and quantity of wires per cable according to the needs of the wiring circuit. It is pretty much standard to use 12-2 and 12-3 cable for lights and outlets. This just means that the cable size is a 12-gauge thickness with either 2 or 3 wires in each cable. These are used on 120-volt circuits which means only one of the wires is a hot conductor.

Certain appliances in the home need extra voltage and so these will have thicker wire and usually two hot conductors. These are 240-volt circuits. Water heaters, clothes dryers, air-conditioners and heating systems will typically use 10-2 or 10-3 cable. This always depends on local electrical codes though.

The big gnarly circuits that use a special cable are ranges and ovens. These take a lot of electricity and they need special range cable which is usually two 6-gauge cables as hot conductors and one 8-gauge cable as a neutral conductor.

The low-voltage systems in home wiring include phone wiring, computer network wiring, and home security systems. These are usually wired with Cat5 cable which is an 8-wire cable designed for communications systems.

Its best to map out electrical circuits in your home using graph paper so you can keep everything to scale. Youll need an accurate floor plan of your home for drawing each electrical circuit. Youll need to make several copies of these plans because youll have many circuit runs.

When you have an idea of where to put the electrical circuits, you can plan out the breaker panel box needs. A standard size of breaker panel is a 200-amp panel with a minimum of 40 breaker slots. All the circuits will start at the breaker box with a breaker or fuse.

There are several dedicated circuits in home wiring. This means that only one fixture or appliance can be wired on the circuit. This standard is always according to the local electrical regulations and codes.

All wiring circuits will be inspected at different intervals during the home construction process. The electrical inspector will make sure all codes have been followed. This helps us feel safe knowing we did the wiring correctly and were not going to catch fire in our sleep at night.
