Almost everyone is familiar with poison ivy. This seemingly harmless plant is found all over the world. Contact with it can elicit mild to severe reactions that will vary from person to person. This is a huge problem with individuals who love to spend time outdoors. It is worth your time to become familiar with the basics of this plant.

Poison ivy is one member of a large group of plants known as Sumachs. These poisonous plants are popular for the common allergic reaction it produces in those who have come into physical contact with it. Inside this plant is a clear liquid called urushiol. This liquid is the culprit responsible for the troublesome reactions that most people experience.

You will find this pest all over North America, Asia, and Europe. It takes on multiple appearances and often resembles other plants, making is especially difficult to identify and avoid. It can be found as a trailing vine, a small bush approximately 2 foot high, or as a climbing vine that will grow up trees or other vertical structures.

The symptoms of this plant are very common, with most people experiencing them from time to time. Some individuals are immune to the plant and experience no reactions at all. This process usually begins with red, inflamed skin that soon becomes itchy. In time, obvious blisters will form. Some people experience a fever. Less common symptoms include dizziness, the swelling of the throat, and difficulty breathing.

This very common allergy is hard to avoid, especially if you spend time in wooded areas. The only real way of preventing it is to avoid the plant all together, which can be difficult to do. It can help to become familiar with the appearance of it, which will help you to identify it and avoid contact. If you have been exposed, wash your clothes in hot water and immediately take a shower, washing the body well.

Treatment for this issue can usually be done in the home. For dryness and itching, apply a wet compress or soak the affected area in cool water. There are also various antihistamine pills and lotions that can bring relief. Also important is to try and avoid scratching the blisters as much as possible.

It should come as no surprise that most people are familiar with poison ivy. Many people have either developed the problem themselves or have known someone who has. It can be a chronic issue with people who live near woods or spend time outdoors. Although it is easy to catch and hard to avoid, the symptoms are usually mild and will recede in a short while.

Poison ivy is a vine that has vivid green leaves, that is closely related to sumac and is in the family Anacardiaceae. This is the most common American allergy, with over fifty percent of the citizens being affected.

Many people think that rubbing or scratching the irritation from poison ivy will cause it to spread, but this is incorrect. The only way to spread the rash is to spread the urushiol oil, so it is best to wash the area well once a rash is seen and then there is no oil residue remaining. If a blister forms due to the rash, you can break the blisters but this can cause infection to set up and scarring as well. But the blisters bursting will not cause the rash to spread.

There are some cures that work better than others, and the most effective are those that get rid of the urushiol oil on the leaves of the plant that cause the reaction. Some believe they are immune to the plant and this is very untrue. For people who have never had the problem before, it can take as long as a week or more to see the rash on the skin. The more times a person is exposed to the plant, the more prevalent chances are you will get a rash.

Symptoms of the condition are a simple red raised rash in the area where contact with the poison ivy was made. After the rash appears, severe itching will be present until the rash is relieved. There are many topical solutions on the market that are made specifically to deal with this type of rash.

Rhuli gel made by Band Aid is made for drying out the blisters that can occur with the reddened area and helping to demolish the itch that is associated with it. This can be found at many drug stores and larger department stores in the health and beauty aisle.

Another product used for this type of problem is Ivy Dry. It can be found in cream or liquid forms, and gets rid of the itch as well. Some people will go visit a doctor, where prednisone is given often. It is a corticosteroid that helps to keep the immune system from responding to the oil and causes the itching to be relieved.

Some doctors will ask that you take a warm Epsom salt bath to quell the itch. Following with calamine lotion on the area will help to finish the itch. Within a couple of days the problem will cease and the itch will be completely gone.

The Massachusetts home or business owner deserves the best in landscape design Massachusetts to enhance the buildings. Simply beautifying the front yard is not sufficient. The entire property should be taken into account as well as using plants that complement the look of the building itself.

Trees are not only pretty, they are useful. They clean the air and generate oxygen. Add to those attributes the birds and small animals they attract. Trees promote good health in any yard or business district.

The landscape designer could be referred to as an architect for your grounds. He or she draws up an overall plan based on the owner’s wishes. It should take into account not only what the owner wants, but how well those chosen plants and trees will do in the climate. For example, he would not plant orange trees in the midwest. He may suggest a plum tree as an alternative. Of course, it is the homeowner who has the final decision to make on any plants.

A top landscaper with an unlimited budget to work with will have an easier time of course. But, with a reasonable investment, the homeowner can achieve the basic look desired. There will be an overall plan as to what variety of trees to plant as well as colors of flowerbeds. Ponds and waterfalls on a small scale are popular.

Imagine having the soothing sound of running water near your patio as you host a barbecue or reunion on the patio. Visualize a retaining wall with matching garden paths. Incorporate a rock garden near one of the lot lines. These are attractive and require no watering.

Seasonal plants and trees will provide the rich reds and oranges of autumn leaves and colorful gardens throughout the summer. A butterfly garden is made up of flowers that attract the tiny birds to the area. Perhaps a birdbath nearby with the appropriate size bird-feeder filled with honey will attract them just as much.

If children will run and play in the yard, leave plenty of space for them. Put defined borders around the flowerbeds at least until they are older. You will not have to worry about replacing flimsy borders when you have them made of concrete. They can be constructed to match the patio and sidewalk.

The job of a person offering landscape design Massachusetts begins with the initial consultation. He or she should give ideas based on what colors and types of plants the owner wants. He should be willing to answer questions about caring for plants, what time of the season they bloom and how much they will cost. If he is not knowledgeable about plants, or does not want to discuss the plans in detail, it would be to the owner’s advantage to select a different professional who does.

Many times we buy plants on impulse then find there is nowhere in the garden that really suits them. Before buying plants carefully examine your garden to see how much sun and shade it gets, whether the soil is well drained or waterlogged and whether your aspect is sheltered or windswept.

You’ll then be equipped to go and buy the best plants for your situation; shade-loving plants for the sheltered areas, sun-lovers for the warm spots, drought-resistant plants for the parched areas which may be either sunny or shaded, and swamp plants for the poorly-drained parts.

But wait! Test your soil first, to determine the pH level of your soil and what kind of nutrients you need to add, if any. Is the soil acid or alkaline? Most plants prefer soil that is slightly acidic, but there are some that must have alkaline soil to grow. You can alter the soil’s pH level, but it’s much easier to simply plant for the soil you have.

Now you are ready to plant. Well – almost. Will you plant in groups or singly? If you buy ‘one of everything’ your garden may seem rather spotty. Group plantings are organised, harmonious and you can vary the color for interest.

Before planting out, place your chosen plants around the garden bed in their pots to see how they will look. Re-arrange them until you are satisfied. Grouping plants in sets of threes or fives usually looks better than planting in groups of even numbers. Be sure that you have an interesting combination of colors and textures of plants. Tall plants should go to the back, or the centre if your garden will be viewed equally from all sides. Try to keep your plants away from trees. The roots of trees are fiercely competitive and will steal all the nutrients and moisture meant for your flowers.

The right color scheme is one way to maintain the harmony in your garden. Imagine the color of the flowers when they are in bloom. Some colors may clash with others, but can still be planted side-by-side if they have a different blooming season. Foliage color is also important. Many flower plants have silver, grey or purplish foliage that is just as attractive as the flower. This means that they are still attractive well past the blooming season and so have added value.

When it comes to spending a little bit of time outside, or better said in the great outdoors, you should be mindful of the various threats that might be around waiting for you to stumble upon them. While for some, this might mean various woodland creatures wandering the woods, for everyone this means the serious threat of poison ivy.

Before you head out for one reason or another, you should be a little better informed concerning the various aspects of this plant and what it can do. Through the course of this article, you will be getting a better idea of what it can do and how you can avoid it. While there might be a lot to consider, you should be a little better informed by having read this piece.

By informing yourself, you are potentially saving yourself several days or even weeks in some extreme cases of extensive discomfort. While this might be somehow tolerable for some people to have to endure, there is no parent out there that wants to see their child in that kind of discomfort for any length of time, especially the length of time that poisoned ivy tends to linger on children.

So you need to be able to instruct your children what to do and what not to do while they are reaching over grown brush or out in the great outdoors. When it comes down to it, if you can follow just two main guidelines, you are going to be much better equipped to keep yourself or your children out of the ivy. The first thing that you are going to have to deal with would be where you are.

You have to make sure that you do not wander off into areas where you are unfamiliar with the territory. You have to consider that there are plenty of safe places to be and these are on the paths laid out for you to walk on. When you are out in the woods, you are going to want to stick to designated areas, as professionals have gone through these paths and ensured that nothing toxic like the ivy grows on the path or near to it.

You should teach your children an old sleep away camp adage: “Leaves of three, let it be.” This is going to tell them that when they are walking around, even in the overgrown parts of some yard, if they see a plant with three leaves (as poisoned ivy has) they should not go near it let alone to touch it. This will keep them from avoiding plants all together as well, as they will only be inclined to avoid the three-leafed plants.

Should you find yourself having a reaction from poison ivy or something like it, there are things that you can do. There are special creams and ointments that should take down the itching and the discomfort, but the important thing is to not touch the infected areas if possible, as this could risk giving it to others or spreading it further on yourself.

You do not want to mess around with poison ivy. You should try to avoid it at all costs, but if you find yourself having a reaction make sure that you take swift and thorough action. You do not want it to spread, especially to others. Also, always have a good idea of where you are and what is around you and you should be able to avoid the ivy altogether.

Get fast acting and soothing relief from painful itching when you use Poison Ivy Spray today! Having Poison Ivy treatment with you on holiday will help to keep you from catching painful poison ivy!

The use of grow lights as a substitute for sunlight to improve plant growth and yields goes back many years. But quite recently LED technology spilled over into this field causing no end of a stir. So let’s examine what all the fuss is about and sift reality from opinion.

One thing that LED lighting technology can lay undisputed claim to is being the most effective means ever devised for converting electricity into light. Unlike high intensity discharge (or HID) lamps which create considerably more heat than light per watt of electricity, LED lights waste very little and thus also run cool to the touch.

The second key difference between LED and HID lamps is that the former can be made to target very specific parts of the spectrum whereas the latter emit light broadly across most of the visible spectrum. Since plants absorb most of the light they need for photosynthesis from just two narrow zones in the spectrum, HIDs not only waste energy creating heat, they also waste it creating useless (to plants) light.

It’s these twin features of very low energy consumption and precise spectral wavelengths that needless to say gained LED grow lights much attention. The ability to provide just the type of light that plants require plus low running costs and no need for expensive climate control systems is obviously an attractive proposition.

Growers were also quick to realize that since LED grow lights run cool it is possible to position them much closer to the plants without causing harm to foliage. This is turn also exploits the way the inverse square law applies to light, in that every time the distance is reduced by half, the amount of light delivered increases fourfold.

Among other advantages is the ability to seamlessly vary the blue:red light ratio to suit different phases during plant growth. HID lights rely instead on physically switching between sets of metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps. Then there are the much reduced maintenance requirements, since LEDs can remain in constant use for a decade, while HIDs demand regular bulb replacements.

So why is there even a debate about LED grow lights? The technology delivers on its claims and modern, well made LED grow lights are a match for any comparable HID unit in terms of performance and outclass them in all other aspects. The problem seems to be that there is a lot on the market that is neither modern nor well made.

It’s not uncommon to see grow light panels containing 225 LEDs being touted as using only 14 watts of electricity. Do the math – that works out at 0.06 of a watt per LED. It’s completely hopeless. To be at all effective each LED needs to be above 1 watt and even then you’ll need a unit containing about 100 of them to match a 500 watt HID. But it only takes a few bad apples for the bad press to take hold and presto, there’s your controversy.

If you found this interesting then be sure to check out these additional articles to find out much more information about LED grow lights and LED grow lights vs HID.

In Canada, however, we have certain traditions that people follow and we all seem to know when the best dates to send flowers.

As everyone knows, Valentine’s Day is the biggest day of the year for flower shops across Canada. Despite being expensive, many people still opt for the traditional bouquet of roses. But a bouquet of roses is quite costly, running anywhere from fifty to a hundred dollars. But it is a very romantic gesture and has a long tradition. Sometimes people will select to go with one single rose, as that can be just as symbolic of your love as many roses can be.

The great thing about flowers is that you can send them across the country no matter where you are. If you want to surprise someone in one province, but live in another, all you have to do is go to your computer and look up the local flower shop in the city that your loved one lives. This gesture is both convenient and thoughtful. The person you send flowers to will know that you are thinking about them, and it can be a great and unexpected surprise.

Birthdays are another great day to send flowers. No matter what age someone is turning, people always love to know that they are being thought of. Sometimes people will send flowers to someone’s work place on their birthday as it truly gives an element of surprise. This is another great tradition in Canada. But there are no traditional flowers for birthdays. This is a chance for the sender to get really creative. They can send a bouquet of the receiver’s favorite flower, such as daisies or lilies. Or, with the help of your local florist, you can come up with something completely unique and original.

Another great day to send flowers is someone’s graduation day. It is a great way to say congratulations, especially if you cannot be there to help your loved one celebrate. And of course, flowers can be seen everywhere at traditional weddings in Canada. The bride and the bridesmaids usually all have a bouquet, and the flower girl often tosses flower pedals along the aisle.

When it comes to showing your sympathy for the loss of a family member or friend, sending flowers is a great way to show you care, even if you can be there to show your support. People often will pool their money together to provide a beautiful arrangement that will stand to demonstrate the sympathy of an entire group. Usually a bouquet like this will come from a group of friends, distant family members, or coworkers.

Regardless of the occasion, there is never a bad time to send flowers. Whether you are wishing someone a happy birthday, or sending your sympathies, sending flowers is the best way to show you care.

Celebrate the life of a loved one. Flowers confer sympathy to loved ones of the bereaved. Offer your condolences to loved ones with Canada flowers.

Many people are excited and relieved that spring and warmer weather is here, however there are just about as many people who are not happy about the change in temperatures because with warmer air brings allergens like moulds and especially pollens. There are several reasons to be conscious of high pollen flowers when the weather turns from cold to hot and when a homeowner is thinking about planting a flower garden or blooming plants and trees around their house, it is best to stick with the low or no pollen blooms.

What gender a plant is has a lot to do with how much pollen it produces and how much an allergy sufferer could be subject to. Who knew plants had gender, and, unlike what most people would think, it’s the males that produce the most pollen, in the flowering process.

Hundreds of the fruitless or seedless trees, shrubs and plants are males and will help in the control of a landscapes pollen count. Female species of plants, trees and shrubs could be messier; however they produce far less pollen than the males. A garden shop or nursery should be able to tell the homeowner which vegetation is male and which is female. Not all plants marked seedless or fruitless will be male, for example, the Ginkgo tree, found in Canada and select place in the Untied States, comes in both male and female versions. Flowers in London Ontario normally have low pollen.

When choosing blooming plants to place in a landscape that will help to keep pollen down and allergies at bay, choose those with a tube or trumpet-shaped flower like the morning glories that are bred in a variety of colors including lavender, white and pale yellow.

There are many pollen-free plants that have flowers such as chrysanthemums, and, there are also several different low-pollen breeds of blooming plants like daffodils, impatiens, begonias, poppies, peonies, tulips, sunflowers, nasturtiums, zinnias and clematis crocus.

If shrubs and trees are more suited for a homeowner’s yard, then pollen-free and low-pollen versions include crabapple, cherry, magnolia, peach, willow, female versions of yew, ash, pear, dogwood, redbud, plumb, some maple and juniper. In addition, some holly with red berries also makes a good choice for limiting pollen count in a landscape.

Check with the plant nursery and ask about foliage that have flowers which attract butterflies rather than bees because the butterflies do not create or carry as much pollen as the other insects.

There are several hedges and trees that will not bloom if kept pruned back year after year; the boxwood has a highly allergenic flower but will not bloom if it is pruned heavily each year.

Plant fungus, rust, mould, black spots and other diseases which grow on plants will reproduce by spores that could cause allergens. Again, ask the nursery workers to point out the disease resistant plants because less disease means that the air around the plant will be healthier.

Above are just a few of the many reasons to be conscious of high pollen flowers and how to prevent allergens from ruining outdoor plans for spring, summer and fall.

Have you been looking for flower delivery to London Ontario? Look no further, there are many florists in London that offer professional and considerate service.

Anyone who loves astrology will adore receiving flowers that relate to their own Sun sign! You may not have even known that starsigns and birthday flowers go together, but if you have an astrology buff on your birthday list, perhaps you should consider sending them birthday flowers this year instead of just another e-card.

Interestingly, there is some degree of variance when looking to find which flower or flowers are most associated to specific Sun signs. Unlike the birthstone, which is associated with the month a person was born, there appears to be a wide array of opinion, and no one authority on the topic of which flowers are associated with which Sun sign.

Just as every birth month is associated to a particular gemstone, each calendar and birth month is also associated with a specific set of flowers. While most astrological experts suggest there is more than one flower associated with each Sun sign, there are also specific meanings behind each type of flower that goes beyond matching flowers to astrology.

When you send a bouquet of flowers as a birthday or anniversary gift, not only can the flower be matched to a specific Sun sign occurring during the recipient’s special date, but the deeper meaning of a flower type can be part of the decision process, if you so desire.

If you know a little more about astrology yourself, you can add a great deal more depth to your floral gift by making your final decision based on the ‘element’ associated with your friend or relative’s Sun sign. A Virgo, for example, is associated with the element of Earth. So while one of the flowers associated with Virgo are thought to be a chrysanthemum, knowing that Virgo is an Earth sign may prompt you to ask your florist if a potted chrysanthemum is available for delivery.

Adding the Sun sign’s element to the floral arrangement can really make a big difference in the overall delivery and meaning of the gift. A practical, earth loving Virgo will not only adore the fact that you were thoughtful enough to send a birthday gift of flowers, but the fact that you sent an everlasting gift of a potted plant that they can transplant will provide a much deeper meaning.

If you have no clue which flowers are associated with which Sun sign, just ask a floral consultant when you place your order over the phone. If placing an order online, you can usually access an easy to understand chart which will help guide you to just the right birthday flowers to send as your gift across town, across Canada or across the world.

Long before the rest of the world became global, the floral industry was importing flowers from all over the world for decades. So even if the person on your birthday list has a birthday in December and lives in Toronto, and their starsigns and birthday flowers are blooming in Chile, your local Toronto florist will be able to access and send flowers all over Canada or all over the world through their vast distribution channels.

Take time to cosider star signs when sending birthday flowers. Flowers can express many different emotions through colour, fragrence, and even origin. Send flowers with confidence.

Bermuda in the yard incorporates attention. It is green from early spring right up until the winter season and it’s light brown throughout the winter. It is a strong kind of grass in most cases merged together with bahia when it’s planted on the highway side. It’s generally seen in utility plantings.

Bermuda requires extensive sun light to be able to form a lawn that’s tight and rich green. A lot of shade may make the Bermuda lawn very weedy and thin. Bermuda turf usually survives drought on a occasional basis. Water a lawn when the waterless spell continues for as much as fourteen days or more.

If you have Bermuda within your grass, you have to feed it adequately. This is done by fertilizing it accurately. You know that you are accomplishing this if the Bermuda knits itself in a lawn that is robust enough to stand against weeding.

A garden owner may have a Bermuda yard by simply following a step-by-step system of Bermuda grass lawn care. Together with appropriate watering and mowing, the Bermuda lawn will grow healthy and tough.

Bermuda develops by way of stolons and rhizomes. These will be the above-ground stems and dispersing root base respectively. Because these multiply quick, a garden owner must be meticulous when it comes to trying to keep it out of the shrub or rose edges. Bermuda which has become wayward is simple to remove in the winter season as it is dormant.

Below are a few tips to remedy the dandelion issues on Bermuda grass care:

1. Apply environment friendly fertilizer during late wintertime.

2. Regulate the grass in the course of early springtime.

3. Use environment friendly fertilizer in the course of late spring. Conduct bug management any time necessary.

4. If needed to improve pH, implement lime in autumn

Here are a few guidelines to take care of your Bermuda lawn in great health

1. Apply lime during the late winter months or while in early spring.

2. Implement environment friendly fertilizer and do bug control in the course of late springtime or during early summer.

3. Implement winterizer (winter conditioner) and perform insect control when needed during late summer time or during early fall.

The key is always to do the tips mentioned throughout every season. You will see improvements with your Bermuda yard after that with time. Make sure to look over the tag about the yard care product prior to deciding to apply it on your Bermuda grass. You should be very careful with all the weed killers and fertilizers. Only apply products that have been specified for Bermuda grass lawn care.

You’ll gain from this eventually. It can be enjoyable to check out a lush green garden.
