In order to have a good pile that will heat up fast and will end up breaking down the materials more effectively, work with a compost pile that measures approximately three cubic feet. When this heap is in place, you may wish to throw a shovelful of garden soil or finished compost to act as a starter.

To make sure that your compost is damp, you will have to touch your compost often. In the event that you compost pile has a fair amount of water, it will feel like a damp but not dripping sponge. You do not want to have a compost pile that is too wet because it will delay the important break down. If the compost pile is rather dry, the rate of decomposition will slow down. Also take the time to turn your compost at least once a week. This allows the decomposition to keep going and it prevents material from getting so compacted that decomposition is going to problematic. This just takes a few moments with a shovel.
